“I’ll see you in a little while,” she murmured, holding Melissa close. The poor girl had barely let go of Felicity since the death of their father. It wasn’t a big surprise. Fliss was more worried about Evan, who had holed himself up in his room. Sighing silently, she let her younger sister go, and dropped a kiss onto her blonde curls.
“Be good for your brother. I won’t be long. I love you.”
It was remarkably easy to pretend everything was okay. After all, wasn’t that what she was used to? She had left a letter in her room, explaining everything. It was tucked up within her art things, somewhere the children wouldn’t find it.
Jogging to a bar, she had a few final drinks, something to steel her wool, and give her the courage she needed. A few drinks, a few cigarettes. She was ready for anything now. Jogging the rest of the way to London Bridge, she peered over the edge. It was now or never.
Carefully, painstakingly, she climbed over the barrier, glad of the darkness of winter that kept her hidden. Crossing her arms, Felicity looked up at the sky.
“I love you,” she whispered, before letting herself fall into the cold, murky water of the Thames.

It’s so warm!
“I’ll be twenty minutes,” she replied quickly, hanging up and returning to her room where Melissa was still waiting.
“Lissy? What’s the matter? Where are we going?”
“We’re going to meet Dad. Come on, Mel. We need to hurry. He’s waiting for us.” She kept the panic out of her voice, but the quiet sense of urgency remained.
“Evan! Evan, put your shoes on! We’re going out!”
“What’s wrong?” Evan called up from the lower levels, a criminal law book in his hands. He set it down on the mantel and grabbed his shoes, jogging up the stairs as soon as they were on.
Greg pulled the car to a stop, stepping out and standing just under the over hang. He knew he had to get there, he knew he had to be with his men, but if something happened tonight, he’d never be able to forgive himself for not saying good bye.
“Dad wants to see us. He’s going to be away for a little while, so he wants to say goodbye before he goes.” It was a lie, and they both knew it, but Evan just nodded, going along with it for the sake of his younger sister.
Felicity helped Melissa with her jacket, and hurried them both out of the flat, on the way to the coffee shop they frequented often.
“Now, Dad might be a little odd, but he’s just tired. He’s been working really hard recently.”
She was running out of excuses.
“You told me we always have a choice,” she whimpered. The finality in his voice was crippling. “Please,” the seventeen year old begged. “Don’t leave us. Please.”
“Fliss, it’s not like I’m going to step out in front of a bullet to kill myself, eh?” He let out a long, low sigh. “Listen to me. I’m going into this, and obviously I’m going to try to come home, but they don’t think we’re coming out of this, I need you to be strong. I’m going to try, but please, if something happens take care of your brother and sister.”
“You know I will.” Her voice was calm now. Crying wouldn’t solve anything. She was shutting down. Disassociating. “I’ll always be there for them, you know that. Always.”
He hung a quick right. “Fliss, Meet me for coffee before I go? take the tube, where we usually go on Saturday? Bring the kids?”
“I’ll be twenty minutes,” she replied quickly, hanging up and returning to her room where Melissa was still waiting.

He knew at least one of them out call. He frowned as he fumbled with the blue-tooth connection, clicking the button in his ear. “Lestrade.” He tried to pretend like he didn’t know it was Fliss. He knew she’d call, she’d want to know what the hell was going on. Of course she would. He stopped at a red light, watching a few people jog in the rain that had started sometime that evening, he had barely noticed until now.
“Don’t you Lestrade me,” she hissed. “Dad. What are you doing? Where are you? Don’t you run out on us like this. We need you.” Felicity couldn’t believe her father was leaving them. Not now. “Please. Don’t go,” she whispered, voice breaking as tears streaked down her face.
“Felicity, relax.” He let out a low sigh. “Look, I don’t have a choice this time, okay?” He tried to explain the situation calmly. “I have to go out on this call, I’m already on my way there. I can’t just turn away, this is my job. These guys have to be stopped, but this will be the single most risky job I’ve been on. They don’t think too many of us will come back.” He sped forward passed the cross walk. “You need to be ready in case it happens.”
